Police arrest 3 medical shop owners for allegedly selling addictive cough syrup

Chennai: Three medical shop owners were arrested by police in Chintadripet for allegedly selling addictive cough syrup of a particular brand without doctor’s prescription,

As per a recent news report in TOI, the tip-off about the nexus was given by a habitual offender arrested by the police as he was addicted to a particular cough syrup and was found taking it before committing a crime.

During the interrogation, police found that the charge of a bottle of the cough syrup is Rs 95 that the offender consumed. The police also seized 109 bottles from him.

Based on the information provided by the offender, a check was conducted by the police on two medical shops located on Arunachala Naicken Street in Chintadripet and found a large stock of particular brand of syrup in both the shops.

The owners Sahul Hameed, 62, Ibrahim, 42 and Velmurugan, 48 had made an entry for at least 25 syrups that were sold on a single day without prescriptions. The trio was arrested for questioning.

TOI reports that a report was sent to the Tami Nadu food safety and drug administration department by the police for further action as they are authorized to book them.

Speaking with TOI, an investigation officer said, "A drug inspector will visit the shop for further inquiries and initiate necessary action. They will have to furnish the necessary details of the medicines sold."

Police further informed TOI, “a case is likely to register under section 27 (D) of the Drugs and Cosmetics Act where the shop can lose the license.”
