New Delhi : Delhi court awards Rs 22 lakh to accident victim

New Delhi : A Motor Accident Claims Tribunal (MACT) has told an insurance firm to pay Rs 22.10 lakh to an electrician whose right hand was crushed under the wheels of a rashly driven mini van in 2013.

The van was insured with the National Insurance Co Ltd.

MACT Presiding Officer Neena Bansal Krishna said the pain, suffering and trauma caused by an accident was incalculable and no amount of money can compensate it.

The tribunal said a disability certificate issued by the All India Institute of Medical Sciences said Ram Yash Kumar Mahto, 40, had suffered 62 per cent permanent physical impairment in his right hand.

"The nature of injuries suffered by (Mahto) were certified to be grievous," it said.

Mahto was returning home in Faridabad in Haryana from his shop in East of Kailash in south Delhi with his brother-in-law on September 26, 2013 night when his bike was hit by the van on Mathura Road here.

Mahto's right hand was crushed under one of the front wheels while his brother-in-law also suffered injuries. Mahto's right hand fingers and thumb were amputated and he had to undergo several surgeries.
