Corex and Phensedyl Banned along with 350 other drugs by the Government

New Delhi:Safety concerns have compelled the Health Ministry to ban 350 fixed dose combination drugs over safety issues. The list of banned medications include popular cough syrups, Phensedyl and Corex.

Zee News reported the reason for imposition being the presence of codeine in these drugs which cause lethal damage to both the brain and the psyche. The government plans to both restrict manufacture and sale of these medicines.These drugs have been found to be “irrational” and without any therapeutic efficacy and use. Concern has been expressed by certain quarters in the government of the possibility of misuse of these drugs which are considered unsafe for mass consumption according to a report submitted.

A show cause notice has also been issued to companies manufacturing and selling these drugs by the Health Ministry.

According to the TOI the ban has come into being with immediate effect and the gazette notification is to be released today.
