Woman sues pharma company for Rs 22 crore

A 26 yrs old woman Khaliah Shaw, a student of Georgia College in US has sued GlaxoSmithKline after its drug allegedly burned 90% of her skin, nearly blinded her and forced her into medically induced coma.

The student diagnosed with bipolar disorder, had been prescribed anti seizure medicine lamotrigine marketed as lamictal by GSK in 2014. She alleges that within weeks of taking the drug blisters broke out all over her body leaving her “in excruciating pain” and she felt like she was “on fire”.

She was diagnosed to be suffering from Stevens-Johnson syndrome, a rare skin disorder which usually occurs as a side effect of a medication. This has tendency to relapse and has no cure.

She along with others is now suing GSK for promoting the product without warning of the risks and claiming $3.45 million (22 crore) as medical cost
