Kurnool : Dr Nawab Shafi Ul-Mulk, a UAE based doctor turned millionaire has announced to invest about Rs. 100 crore in diagnostic services to the hinterlands of Kurnool. The motive of this investment is to introduce better and affordable cancer diagnostic services including CT, PET and MRI to the district diagnostic centers. Along with it, mini cyclotron, and success of tele-medicine are also key part of this investment.

'Cyclotron is a type of particle accelerator invented by Ernest O. Lawrence in 1934 in which charged particles.'

Talking about the need and importance of cyclotron, Dr Mulk said, “A mini-cyclotron costs just ten percent of a cyclotron and is the size of a refrigerator. At our mini- oncology centres, the patient’s results will be read and interpreted in 30 minutes", reports Hindu

Their large size and high cost inhibits investment required to make crucial diagnostic services available to the masses, he added.

Meanwhile he also talked about the press conference called by the Global Association of Physicians of Indian Origin (GAPIO), which held its seven annual conference themed around "Innovations in medicine."

GAPIO is a nonprofit organization and its vision is "Improving Health Worldwide". GAPIO stands to empower physicians of Indian origin to achieve highest professional standards, to provide affordable good quality healthcare, to contribute to local and regional community development and thereby help to reduce health inequalities and alleviate suffering globally.

The association had recognized Dr Mulk with an award for innovation in healthcare that he dedicated it to his alma mater, the Kurnool Medical College.

Dr Mulk has pitched his idea to Kamineni Srinivas, the Health Minister for Andhra Pradesh, who inaugurated the conference.

Talking about its intervention in diagnostic services, Dr Mulk said, “It is difficult to say just how many people will take to it at this stage but we see a big demand for such services. For me, this initiative is less commercial but more about repaying a debt to motherland."
