Power Supply A matter of Concern for Pharma : CMD, Biocon

New Delhi:In an Interview to The Economic Times this week, Kiran Mazumdar Shaw, CMD, Biocon emphasised on power supply being a big concern for the Pharma sector and the industry requiring support in the area. Describing Pharma regulations as'archaic', Ms. Mazumdar called for streamlining of regulations so that the industry could meet up with global competition.

 

Speaking on the eve of the Budget Ms. Shaw said that India Inc was calling for an environment that would bring about a sense of ease in doing business and more transparent and consistent policies.

 

She felt that the business environment had not changed and regulations continued to remain cumbersome. "The government is constantly flip flopping on policies" she added. Highlighting it as an area which needed improvement for India Inc. she wanted the government to look into it.

 

Talking about expectations from the government for India Inc, Ms. Shaw said "I expect sops to be given really to PPP models in large infra projects." She was confident that the government would actually allocate budget to rural electrification and renewable energy in the coming budget.

 

Speaking about EU permission for a product launch to her company recently, she said that she saw it as an opportunity of opening account in the generic space and moving up the value chain from API's to formulated generics. 'This announcement is a milestone in this direction' she added.

 

Reacting on government involvement in the healthcare sector, Ms. Shaw was of the opinion that if they invested more in the country's own universal healthcare model it would automatically expand the domestic market. Regarding exports she was of the opinion that the extention of the current set of incentives was adequate.
