Maharashtra: 500 Sun Pharma MRs organise one day Strike
Mumbai: The Federation of Medical and Sales Representatives’ Associations of India (FMRAI) staged a one-day strike involving over 500 Sales Representatives of Sun Pharma on Monday. It was pitched as a protest against the firm for indulging in malpractices towards reducing the salaries of employees and demoting them "illegally" after the $3.5 billion Ranbaxy-Sun Pharma merger in 2005.
The protest demanded immediate release of the "illegally deducted wages" of the sales staff working within the Pharmacare & Stancare division of Sun Pharma and re-categorization of the sales executives as medical sales representatives (MSR).
According to a Livemint report, it was noted that after the merger between the two Pharmaceutical organizations (Sun Pharma acquired Ranbaxy), some of the employees of Ranbaxy were allegedly transferred and demoted. Thus not following the legal implications by the court during the merger was signed; the wages of around 86 employees were also deducted (reduced) in the process.
In this association, the largest union of medical sales representative in India Sun Pharma and FMRAI had approached the Maharashtra Industrial Court located in Mumbai earlier. Reprehending action was taken by the court in this respect by directing Sun Pharma to immediately release the pending salaries of the said employees.
An FMRAI spokesperson had said in this respect, “The striking fieldworkers will be staging a demonstration in front of the State Labour Commissioner’s office in all states and memorandum will be submitted demanding the intervention of Maharashtra Labour department.”
A law suit was also filed by FMRAI against Sun Pharma regarding the matter stating that the firm withheld the salaries and expenses of its said 86 sales representatives unfairly since May.
The General Secretary of FMRAI, Santanu Chatterjee in his letter to Sun Pharma on 8th September had also written that “The sale promotion employees shall resort to demonstration, dharna and other industrial actions in pursuance of the demands.”
