Jaslok Hospital looks to handover its daily operations; Hospital Giants line up

Hospital giants Radiant Life Care, Malaysia's IHH Healthcare, Zydus Hospitals, and the Hinduja Group are considering a proposal to run daily operations of Mumbai based Jaslok Hospital


Mumbai: The Mumbai based Jaslok Hospital is looking to expand its footprint in the country for which various suitors has shown their interest.


TOI reports that the managing trust of the hospital is looking to hand over the operations and management control for which 6 firms have shown their interest including Malaysia based IHH Healthcare and Indian conglomerate Hinduja Group.


Jaslok Hospital is a 350-bedded Hospital on Peddar Road which was established in 1973 by businessman and philanthropist Seth Lokoomal Chanrai and family is considered one of the oldest tertiary hospitals in the city and is credited with diagnosing the first HIV case in the city, among other medical achievements.


“It is sad, but true that Jaslok Hospital is going to change hands,’’ an old-time told TOI.


However, when contacted, Jaslok Hospital CEO Jitendra Haryana's team said there is no truth in media reports about the “sale” or “handover” of their hospital to a corporate group.


TOI reports that Radiant Life Care, Malaysian healthcare giant IHH Healthcare, Zydus Hospitals, and the Hinduja Group are among those who are considering a proposal to run Jaslok.


Recently, IHH Healthcare won the bid to acquire cash trapped Fortis healthcare and is the world’s second largest hospital network that also operates Gleneagles Global hospital in Mumbai.

Zydus Hospitals has a footprint in Gujarat. The chairman is Pankaj R Patel, chairman and managing director, Cadila Healthcare Ltd (Zydus Cadila). KKR backed Radiant operates Juhu’s Nanavati Hospital after taking over its operations in 2014.


Jaslok Hospital official told TOI, “Trust-run hospitals cannot be sold.” However, a senior doctor pointed out that trusts can enter into a lease agreement with a corporate entity to run the hospital.
