Once Again: Health Ministry invites suggestions on issue of replacing gelatin capsules

New Delhi: Through a recent notice, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has once again invited suggestions and comments from the stakeholders including manufacturers, marketers of HPMC capsules as well as NGOs in order to have a wider consultation on the issue of replacing gelatin capsules with cellulose-based capsules.

Last year, a proposal had been put forward to the Drug controller to replace Gelatine capsules with cellulose-based capsules which are of plant origin and are safe for use as compared to animal-based Gelatine capsules.

In this regards, earlier in June this year, the ministry had invited comments from the stakeholders on replacing gelatin capsules with cellulose-based capsules and the ministry has received various comments from different stakeholders and the same was placed before the Expert Committee constituted for the purpose by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare to address all the technical issues pertaining to replacement of gelatin capsules with cellulose-based capsules for encapsulation of drugs.

Now, the Expert Committee has desired that those stakeholders who have not yet made representations and are willing to present their case before the Expert Committee may also submit their comments and representations so that a considered view can be taken in the matter.

The notice further states that in order to have a wider consultation, comments and representations are invited from such stakeholders within 15 days who are working on this subject and have not yet submitted their comments so far to this Directorate.
