AYUSH drug makers to offer alternatives to banned FDC drugs

Tamil Nadu:In response to the union government's recent ban on the fixed dose drug combinations (FDC), the Tamil Nadu Ayurveda, Siddha and Unani Drugs Manufacturers Association (TASUDMA) has announced the availability of potential traditional drugs in the Ayush systems, that can take the place of the banned FDC compositions.

Efficacy proven, documented and with no side effects or adverse reactions these traditional drugs have been in use for years, reports the association. The Indian System of Medicine (ISM) industry in the state has demanded that the government give them the support and encouragement by issuing licenses to all the SSI units to manufacture all classical and proprietary drugs. The reassured saying that they had all the facilities and potential to manufacture traditional drugs that could act as common replacements to the FDC banned compositions.

“ Tamil Nadu AYUSH industry has all the potential to manufacture good and efficacy proven drugs which are in use for many years and all of them are documented. The government should support by giving licences to the manufacturers”, said Vijay Mehtha, president of TASUDMA. He further stated that there were solutions for all diseases in the Siddha System which carried proven records of efficacy and they were willing to provide the drugs provided the government gave them a green signal.

Pharmabiz reports that in an attempt to gain a stronghold for Siddha drugs the TASUDMA is planning to have a meeting with the Union Ayush minister, Mr. Mehta reported. He also stated that 400 companies manufacture Ayush drugs in the state and deliver them to the government; and that it was only recently, after a period of four years, the department of Indian systems has started issuing licenses to companies for manufacturing classical and proprietary drugs. The department he said had also appointed a new licensing authority for the state the state of Tamil Nadu.
