Alkem Labs Founder Samprada Singh passes away at the age of 92 years

Patna: Mumbai-based drugmaker, Alkem Laboratories Founder and Chairman Emeritus, Samprada Singh expired on Saturday at the age of 92 years after a brief illness in Mumbai's Lilavati hospital.


Confirmation to this effect was given by Singh's family members to IANS.


"We would like to inform you that the Company's Founder and Chairman Emeritus of the Board of Directors of the Company, Shri Samprada Singh expired," Alkem Labs said in a BSE filing.


Singh was among the richest persons of Bihar and a well-known industrialist. He was an inhabitant of Okari village in the Jahanabad district and completed his graduation from Patna University.


Forbes magazine in the list of rich people of the country had placed Mr Singh's company above Reliance of Anil Ambani in 2017. In the list, Singh was placed on 43rd position while Mr Ambani on 45th position. In 2017, Singh had an estimated net worth of $3.3 billion.


Politicians, businessmen, as well as common people, paid rich tribute to Singh. Terming him a "precious gem", Bihar Education Minister Krishna Nandan Prasad Verma told IANS, "Born in a farmer's family, Sampradababu established to set an industry, which is an inspiration for all".


Union Minister Ashwani Chaubey also paid tribute to Singh. "He made an identity with his hard work that took Bihar's name to the top of the world," stated Chaubey.

Former Chief Minister Jiten Ram Manjhi and former MP Pappu Yadav also expressed grief over Singh's death.


The Industrialists' Association of Bihar termed Singh death an "irreparable loss".




Alkem Labs was established in 1973 as a healthcare marketing firm by founders, Samprada Singh and his brother, BN Singh. It started manufacturing in 1978, when it established its first plant at Taloja, Mumbai. Since its incorporation in 1973, the company has grown significantly.


Singh, an industry veteran with over 43 years of experience in the Indian pharmaceutical industry has received various prestigious awards such as the 'Life Time Achievement Award' by Pharma Business and Technology in 2000, the 'Lifetime Achievement Award' at the Pharmaceutical Leadership Summit 2009, 'Asian Grid Leadership Lifetime Achievement Award 2006', and others.
